Making Carolina Beach, NC

Well we made it through the Cape Fear River in North Carolina.  but not before we had a few if not feared then "well respected" shallow spots. The Rock Pile  (you actually call a "security"  on the VHF Marine radio to let other boaters and barges know you are entering and leaving the area as we need to stay in the middle of the channel--by the way, there are rock piles on each side), Shallottes Inlet and Locwoods Folly Inlet (both recently dredged, yeah). We had current against all day so we hit Cape Fear at about 4:30pm and only could manage between 3 knots with the head sail helping. We went into Snow Cut (where boaters call it the parking lot because so many boats run aground ) to our mooring ball at Carolina Beach City Mooring field at 8:30pm. We were really tired and shut everything off (including our brain) had a beer, listened to the waves crashing (the beach is just two blocks away) and went to bed.

It's a beautiful morning and I'm having my coffee and watching about ten different pelicans fish for their breakfast.  It never gets old. They cruise so high then point their beak down and crash into it. They seem to come up with a fish each time too.

We leave at 8am and hope to make Hammock Bay tonight, about 50 miles.  Here's hoping we have deep water and current with us...well how about enough water and we get in before 8pm.  We'll keep you posted.

Beautiful inlets..too bad you're so worried about running aground to take pictures.

       One of my breakfast dates

The splash and the sound they make when they hit the water is the best.
