The Few, The Proud, The Marines

We stayed at Mile Hammock Bay in North Carolina. It's a small bay off Camp Lejeune, a United States Marine Corps base. Our friend Denise called a head and was told that there were no firing drills scheduled for tomorrow.  (Seriously, I never knew you could call the Marines to find out their plans. But I guess if you call a head you won't get delayed if they are having firing practice across the intercoastal.  Note to self get Marines cell number for next time). However, the Marines were on maneuvers as we found out as we were entering a tricky spot before our anchorage. They were gun boats with plenty of Marines to man them.  There were Marine carrying boats and there were Marine helicopters. Several passed us and I always gave a friendly wave. Only one Marine waved back, guess he forgot himself for a minute.

At our anchorage we heard some kind of firing..sounded like good fireworks or thunder.  It didn't last long and soon it quieted down and we felt safe and proud to sleep under the protection of the Marines.

PS. Hats off to my Dad, he was a Marine.

Here is one of the pretty inlets that you barely have time to look at because you're so buy watching your depth sounder. We saw a boat that went aground at one of the "tricky" shoals.  You feel so bad and there is nothing you can do but sneak by and hope you don't have the same fate.

     Following Blue...nice to follow.
